What Are Eating Disorders & Poor Body Image?
What are Eating Disorders?
Eating disorders are serious mental health conditions that can deeply impact your life. They can leave you feeling overwhelmed, isolated, and disconnected from yourself.
Signs You Might Have an Eating Disorder:
-
Constant thoughts about food, weight, or body shape
-
Sudden changes in weight
-
Eating patterns that feel out of control
-
Deep fear of gaining weight
If any of this feels familiar, know that you are not alone. You are worthy of support and healing. You deserve to feel good in your body!

What is Poor Body Image?
Poor body image can make you feel frustrated and unhappy with yourself, leading to negative thoughts and feelings about your appearance.
What Poor Body Image Can Look Like:
-
Feeling dissatisfied with your body size, shape, or weight
-
Turning to extreme dieting or excessive exercise
-
Avoiding social situations because of how you feel about your body
Remember, you are deserving of kindness and compassion, from yourself and others. Your unique beauty is worth celebrating, and with the right support, you can cultivate a more loving and accepting relationship with your body and mind.
The Problem with Eating Disorder Diagnoses
While having specific eating disorder diagnoses is essential for treatment planning, understanding, and insurance purposes, we believe that there are many drawbacks and limitations to the way eating disorders are classified and diagnosed.
Discriminatory biases in eating disorder diagnoses—whether related to body size, gender, race, age, or socioeconomic status—can prevent individuals from receiving the care they need. These biases perpetuate misconceptions about who is "allowed" to have an eating disorder and may lead to underdiagnosis, misdiagnosis, or delayed treatment.
We, as therapists, have adopted a more inclusive and nuanced understanding of eating disorders, one that moves beyond stereotypes and embraces the diversity of experiences and bodies that are affected by these conditions. We strive to provide compassionate, culturally sensitive, and individualized care, which is critical in supporting all people on their journey toward recovery, regardless of their identity or background.
How We Can Help
Therapeutic Services for Eating Disorders and Poor Body Image
We offer evidence-based therapeutic approaches tailored to meet your unique needs! Our approach combines empathy, understanding, and professional expertise to help you:
Understand the Origins of Your EatingDisorder
Together, we will explore the factors contributing to your eating disorder or poor body image. This may include past trauma, societal influences, family dynamics, or mental health conditions like anxiety and depression.
Improve Body Image
Your relationship with your body exists on a spectrum, and we cannot expect to magically jump from body hatred to body love. We also cannot expect to remain in the same place on the body image spectrum all day, every day, for the rest of our lives! We will inevitably have negative thoughts and feelings about our bodies at some point; the trick is to remain grounded in a set of values that are not appearance-related, but rather ones that honor who you are as a human.
Restore Your Intuition
We were all born “intuitive eaters.” Together, we’ll work on healing any disordered eating patterns, such as binge eating, restricting, or purging, and replace them with more nourishing ways of relating to food that restore your inner intuitive eater.
Build Emotional Resilience
Eating disorders and body image struggles are often intertwined with emotional regulation difficulties. Through mindfulness, dialectical behavioral therapy, and other strategies, we will help you to develop a set of coping skills to manage the stress, anxiety, and emotional triggers that may impact your relationship with food and body.
Challenge Negative Thought Patterns
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is one of the primary tools we use to help you identify and challenge the distorted beliefs that fuel poor body image. By recognizing and reframing these thoughts, you can begin to cultivate self-acceptance and self-compassion.
Create a Personalized Treatment Plan
Every individual is different, and recovery is a deeply personal journey. We tailor treatment to your specific needs, goals, and challenges. Whether you’re just beginning to address your eating disorder or seeking support for long-term recovery, we’re here to walk alongside you.
We at Reflect & Restore Therapy take a Health at Every Size (HAES), anti-diet approach to our work.
